On Monday we received our 2015 Final Property Tax Bill and I got very curious to see where our money was going. I didn’t have to do much digging around since the bill also included a pamphlet on how our taxes were working for us. All I had to do is figure out the percentage distribution for our case based on the given example.
City VS Education VS Transit Taxes
There are specific tax rates for the City, education and transit. The table below tabulates the residential tax rates and provides our property taxes.
Our City taxes pay for the following services:
|Police Services & Board||24.94%||$393.22|
|Parks, Forestry & Recreation||7.99%||$125.99|
|Shelter, Support & Housing Administration||7.38%||$116.27|
|Toronto Public Libraty||4.46%||$70.27|
|Toronto Employment & Social Services||3.97%||$62.58|
|Toronto Paramedic Services||1.94%||$30.60|
|Facilities Management, Real Estate, and Environment & Energy||1.70%||$26.75|
|Toronto Public Health||1.45%||$22.91|
|Economic Development & Culture||1.40%||$22.06|
Do you know what your property taxes pay for?Most of these are self-explanatory. The “other” taxes include “general government charges, such as fees charged by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), other City functions including administration, financial management and accountability offices, and smaller City agencies and commissions such as Exhibition Place.“
